Now, I’ll be honest, here: I didn’t want to recommend a zoo – in fact, I didn’t even want to go to one because, like any other right- minded person, I firmly believe animals should be wild and free, not penned up in tiny cages, to provide entertainment for humans.
So, I didn’t want to visit Monkey Park… but then I read that you can actually touch and hold some of the monkeys, and, I’m just going to be honest here: I really, really wanted to touch a monkey. Doesn’t everyone, though?
The leaflet I happened upon, however, also informed me that, as well as being “The World’s Smallest Zoo,” Monkey Park is also a breeding centre for endangered species of primates. This made me feel a little better about visiting it, so, on an overcast morning in December, when it was too chilly for the beach or the pool, Terry and I pulled into the deserted car park, and eyed the closed door of the park suspiciously.
It wasn’t looking good, really, and we were already feeling guilty as we handed over our 10 euros each (Ten euros! Each! It may or may not be the smallest zoo in the world, but it’s certainly one of the cheapest…), plus another 3 euros to buy a bag of nuts for the monkeys. The entrance to the park was pretty inauspicious, but, within a few minutes, we were standing in the first enclosure, with squirrel monkeys sitting on our shoulders and eating out of our hands, and it was actually kind of amazing, really.
Since then, we’ve visited Monkey Park several times: each time, we’ve been impressed by how large and well-kept the enclosures are, and how much the staff we’ve encountered seem to genuinely care about their charges. As well as the squirrel monkeys, you can also get up close and personal with lemurs, guinea pigs and iguanas, while larger primates, plus a selection of birds and reptiles, are kept behind bars. I don’t think I’ll ever be totally comfortable with the idea of zoos, but this one is as good as it gets, and while most tourists will continue to overlook it in favour of the much larger – and much more expensive – Loro Parque, Monkey Park offers a rare opportunity to interact with the animals, for as long as you like, which makes it worth much more than the 10 euros it costs to get in.

- Visit in the morning, before the park gets busy: once the monkeys have had their fill of visitor snacks, they’ll go back to their hiding places and leave you standing there with a tub of nuts, wondering what to do with it.
- Keep an eye on your belongings: I’m still not over the time a squirrel monkey attempted to untie the knot on my halter-neck top, after managing to open the zip on Terry’s backpack and try to make off with whatever he could find inside…
- Grab some fresh fruit from your hotel’s breakfast buffet, if you can (Bananas are contraband here, but you’re allowed to take in other food…): the monkeys will be your friends for life. Well, until they’ve eaten everything you have to offer, at least…
- When you enter the park, turn immediately to the right: the monkey enclosure there is often overlooked by visitors, so offers the best opportunity to get the monkeys to yourself for a while.
